Northwest, like the rest of the network airlines, will reduce fourth-quarter capacity in response to the high cost of fuel. The airline is also making a case that a Delta merger makes more sense than ever given the fuel crisis the industry faces.

Almost 34 million Americans said they plan to take a cruise in the next three years and approximately 5.1 million of them want to visit Hawaii, according to a recent survey. The Cruise Lines International Association 2008 Cruise Market Profile Study said 15 percent of those surveyed plan to go to Hawaii on their next cruise vacation.

iSeatz, which provides travel and entertainment solutions, has appointed Charles (Chuck) Jensen as vice president of travel account management. A seasoned airlines industry executive, Jensen brings more than two decades of experience in sales and marketing, online sales and product development to the company.

Port Canaveral has a record $213 million in current projects and newly signed cruise deals to host the world’s largest ships next year. As a result, the port is creating jobs and boosting tax revenue for the area’s sagging economy, according to estimates from Braun & Trammell.

In response to record-high fuel costs, German carrier Air Berlin will cut its domestic service 10 percent and its long-haul service 30 percent. Air Berlin is Germany’s second-largest airline, after Lufthansa.
