American Airlines is launching new service from Chicago to Cozumel, Mexico. The Saturday-only service will begin on Saturday, Feb. 12, and will run through April 2. The flight will return to American’s schedule for the winter season in November 2011.
Blackberry users now can board British Airways (BA) flights using the airline’s new Mobile Boarding Passes. Users of Android-operated mobile smartphones will also benefit from the new functionality next month, following its successful launch to iPhone users in July.
Southwest Airlines is selling international flights to its customers by connecting with Volaris, Mexico's second-largest airline. Starting Nov. 12, Customers can book service from 20 Southwest cities to five Volaris Mexican destinations (Cancun, Guadalajara, Morelia, Toluca/Mexico City, and Zacatecas), for travel starting Dec. 1. The new service will connect through Los AngelesInternationalAirport, OaklandInternationalAirport, and San JoseInternationalAirportand will create up to 85 additional flight itineraries.
On November 10, 2010, Caribbean Airlines will begin twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays) return services from Port of Spain to Grenada and New York. The Trinidadian carrier takes over the Grenada-New York route which commenced under the Air Jamaica banner earlier this year.
United Continental Holdings, Inc. announced that Continental Airlines will begin nonstop flights between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands (PLS), on Feb. 18, 2011, subject to government approval. Providenciales will be Continental's 26th Caribbean destination.
Lufthansa is expanding its flight services this winter, Lufthansa is adding more destinations and frequencies to its existing network. An average of 12,218 flights per week are scheduled, compared with 11,803 flights (an increase of 3.5 percent) in the 2009-10 winter period. From Oct. 31, when the new timetable goes into effect, Lufthansa will offer flights to 197 destinations in 85 countries (compared to 191 destinations in 78 countries in the previous year).
