The Coast Guard said the Westerdam was reportedly maneuvering through ice near Hubbard Glacier the evening of May 10 when it sustained damage approximately 15 feet below the waterline.
The U.S. Travel Association (USTA) unveiled a plan to create 1.3 million U.S. jobs and add $859 billion to the U.S. economy by 2020. The USTA also is calling for reform of what it describes as an antiquated visa process that often drives international travelers to other countries. The heart of USTA’s plan is to increase staffing, reduce visa interview wait times and expand the Visa Waiver Program.
Hilton Worldwide announced the appointment of Carlos Baruki as regional vice president, sales and marketing for Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. Carlos Baruki will report to Rob Scypinski, vice president, sales and marketing, The Americas, and lead the sales and marketing strategy for the company’s growing regional portfolio.
Tour operator Thomas Cook said it is optimistic about the state of its future business despite tough market conditions. Europe's second-largest travel operator by market capital said its net loss fell to $329.3 million from $346 million a year earlier, while revenue for the six months to March 31 climbed 3.7 percent to $5.61 billion, driven by higher prices and an increase in the number of people buying more expensive trips.
