Holland America’s Westerdam Hits Ice in Alaska, No Breach Reported

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an incident in which Holland America Line’s Westerdam hit ice in Alaska on May 10. The Coast Guard said the Westerdam was reportedly maneuvering through ice near Hubbard Glacier the evening of May 10 when it sustained damage approximately 15 feet below the waterline.

The hull was reportedly not breached and no injuries or pollution were reported. The Westerdam continued on its voyage to Sitka, where it was met by Coast Guard officials. Holland America said the incident took place in Yakutat Bay near Hubbard Glacier.

“Westerdam received a mild indentation in the hull while maneuvering through ice during high winds,” the company said in a statement. “The hull was not breached and the ship continued on its published itinerary as planned” to Sitka yesterday and then Ketchikan. The Westerdam departed Seattle on May 7 on a seven-day Alaska sailing. Upcoming cruises will sail on schedule, Holland America said.
