The U.S. Department of Transportation has fined Air Canada $50,000 for deceptive advertising. The DOT said that early in 2011, Air Canada displayed advertisements on its websites that did not disclose the amount of taxes and fees passengers would have to pay in addition to the advertised fare or lead the consumer directly to the information on these taxes and fees.

Southwest Airlines reported second quarter 2011 net income of $161 million compared to net income of $112 million in the same quarter last year. Revenue rose 31 percent to $4.1 billion, reflecting the acquisition of AirTran Airways. Analysts had estimated the airline would take in $4.4 billion.

Police in Argentina are investigating the slaying of two French tourists who were found dead near a hiking trail, authorities said. Other tourists found the bodies of the female victims, who were both around 30 years old, the state-run Telam news agency said. They were last seen in the hostel where they were staying on July 16.

Sunny Land Tours, the Palm Coast, Fla.-based operator of tours to the Middle East and Latin America, has resigned its membership in U.S. Tour Operators Association effective immediately, according to USTOA. The association sent out a notice that Sunny Land will no longer be covered under the USTOA $1 Million Travelers Assistance Program after Aug. 1.

The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism is offering a diving deal in the three-island territory of St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas, which tourism officials said is one of few destinations offering five dive types: Wreck, reef, wall, pier and shore.
