The Bahamas is to receive a $50 million loan to improve its air transportation system in a program expected to increase flights within the island chain and modernize its airports. The Inter-American Development Bank says its loan also will be used to create an independent body to investigate aviation incidents and accidents.

St. Lucia has named Lorne Theophilus its new minister of tourism, heritage and creative industries. Theophilus, a member of St. Lucia’s parliament, was appointed following the swearing-in of the country’s newly elected cabinet, which is led by Kenny Anthony, the country’s prime minister.

Holland America Line is removing Mazatlan and Acapulco from the itineraries of three ships sailing in Mexico from January through March. The line did not specify why it cancelled the calls, but noted in its statement that “the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Mazatlan tourism officials in the past worked to address security concerns aired by cruise lines.

A new $12 million straw market opened to vendors, tourists and residents in Nassau, Bahamas, on Friday, Dec. 16, following 10 years at a temporary site, said Charles Maynard, minister of youth, sports and culture. The new facility will be operated by the Bahamas government.
