The Business Travel Coalition (BTC)  urged the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to study the consequences of recent airline mergers in light of US Airways' (US) announcement last week that it is aggressively pursuing a combination with AA.

At a glittering event staged in Jamaica, Coco Reef—Tobago was for the fourth consecutive year the recipient of the World Travel Award for the Caribbean’s Leading Hotel. The awards, described by the Wall Street Journal as the “Oscars” of the global travel and tourism industry, revealed who are the “best-of-the-best” in the region.

Central America is becoming an increasingly popular host destination for major events as the region continues to improve its conference and meetings infrastructure. Two new conference centers are currently under construction in Costa Rica and Panama, to add to the region’s existing offering of hotels and conference centers equipped with the latest technology to make every event a success.

American Airlines’ parent corporation, AMR Corp., said it lost $1.7 billion in the first quarter of the year, saying most of that was due to the costs of its bankruptcy restructuring. Its net loss for the first quarter of 2011 was $436 million.
