On Wednesday, the majestic 150,000 ton Queen Mary II with 2,600 passengers, the 91,000 ton Constellation with 1,950 passengers, the MS Sun Princess with 1,950, the Sun Bird with 1,500 and the Aida Vita with 1,582 passengers graced the port of Basseterre with approximately 9,500 passengers. According to the cruise ship schedule issued by the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority, some 18 cruise ships with a capacity of 28,296 passengers are scheduled to visit St. Kitts during the first two weeks of February and 48,109 passengers for that month.

Club Med initiated a major overhaul at Buccaneer´s Creek Village in Martinique, the first Club Med village to open in the Americas. The property, which opened in 1971, will be closed until December for a multi-million dollar rebuilding and renovation project that will increase the room count to 293, including 44 new suites

In a deal with Fiesta Holidays, which provides ground services to travelers in Mexico´s Cozumel, Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Expedia will rebrand seven hotel activity desks in Cozumel as Expedia!fun kiosks. Expedia recently rebranded kiosks that it owns in Hawaii as Expedia!fun kiosks. Many of the Hawaii operations were acquired from Activity World, a tour reseller in Hawaii.

Spanair, the Spanish air carrier, ruled out this week any flying to Iberian America in the near future, though it hinted at the possibility of joining other companies to cover international routes. The airline´s President and CEO Gonzalo Pascual explained two of his carriers –Air Plus and Aerolineas Argentinas- could enter the Star Alliance two years from now as associated members.

US Airways is expanding service to the Caribbean and Latin America during February. Flying to this part of the world is the airline´s new offering intended to help itself pull out of bankruptcy and become a low-cost carrier. Aviation experts are calling the destination expansion risky but necessary for the airline. The new Caribbean and Latin America flights makes Fort Lauderdale a gateway to nine cities, eight of which are new from Fort Lauderdale.

Amid a reshuffling of his administration, Belize´s Premier Said Musa brought down the number of cabinet posts from 16 to 12 and nominated Godfrey Smith as new tourism minister. A graduate of Law School at the West Indies University and with a master degree in Arts and International Relations at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in Boston, Mr. Smith has had a longstanding record as a successful lawyer since 1994.
