US Airways expands Caribbean, Latin American service
US Airways is expanding service to the Caribbean and Latin America during February. Flying to this part of the world is the airline´s new offering intended to help itself pull out of bankruptcy and become a low-cost carrier.
Aviation experts are calling the destination expansion risky but necessary for the airline. The new Caribbean and Latin America flights makes Fort Lauderdale a gateway to nine cities, eight of which are new from Fort Lauderdale.
US Airways´ new destinations should bring the airline more money, since ticket prices are higher to international locations than domestic.
The airline says its new destinations are tapping into new segments of the market. Instead of flying just to leisure markets from Fort Lauderdale, like Cancun, Mexico, the airline has picked business and visiting family and friend markets, said US Airways spokeswoman Amy Kudwa.
