United Airlines has increased its ticket prices for the second time this week, shifting the cost of higher fuel prices to its customers. The move could open the way for other carriers to follow suit -or drive customer to those carriers. United described the increase as a fuel surcharge, not the advertised fare.

Continental Airlines blamed record fuel costs for its $80 million first quarter loss and announced plans to reduce its fleet and flights. Excluding a $5 million after tax gain from the sale of aircraft, Continental recorded a net loss of $85 million ($0.86 diluted loss per share).
