Virgin Atlantic Airways announced a $162.9 million investment in product development as it reported a strong year and a return to profitability. Despite the winter closure of London Heathrow and the ash cloud crisis costing the business a combined $65.2 million, strong growth in business traffic and solid load factors across all cabins delivered a good recovery.

Low-cost intraregional carrier REDjet has started discussions with an airline in Central America and several regional governments to create a new air service link with Panama.

Delta Air Lines and Grupo Aeromexico have announced a tentative agreement for a long-term, exclusive commercial alliance. Under the agreement, Delta and Aeromexico will expand cooperation to leverage each other’s strengths.

Aeromexico, Boeing, and the Mexican government partnered on a transcontinental flight powered by a General Electric engine, in a commercial airplane using bio-combustible fuel. The Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) along with the Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), in coordination with Aeromexico and the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, will fly more than 250 passengers from Mexico City to Madrid.

The island’s Tourism Minister Ian Douglas was quoted as saying that the country would welcome every opportunity to increase air transportation, and that if REDjet wanted to forge a relationship with Dominica “we will really go for it…to ensure we get more persons into the destination.”
