The Haitian government has elevated tourism to the top of its development agenda, identifying it as a priority in improving the country’s stagnant economy. But is tourism really Haiti’s magic bullet?

A recent study reveals that international tourists traveling to Brazil are staying in alternative accommodation in greater numbers. In recent years, hostels, campsites and rental houses, rose by 6 percent, putting it at 17% of the total international visitor accommodation market. Hotel still holds the largest market share at 50.6%.

Regional carriers can be major contributors to the development of the Caribbean by providing reliable intra-Caribbean service and by bringing in visitors from the rest of the Americas, a senior Caribbean airline executive has said.

The International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) has branded Jamaica as the Home of Community Tourism internationally and supported the mission and vision of the Countrystyle Community Tourism Network/Villages as Businesses in developing the potential of community entrepreneurs through community tourism while protecting their natural environment, heritage and culture. Eco-tourism is one of the main niche markets that internationally attracts upscale visitors and can assist communities on the south coast of Jamaica to earn more income within their own environment.
