The number of canceled flights between Buenos Aires, Argentina and cities in the U.S., Europe and South America continues to rise since it was first reported last week that stiff winds blew ash from a Chilean volcano in a widening arc across Argentina to the capital.

The new Quito, Ecuador, airport will open next year, highlighting a variety of new tourism infrastructure improvements and events. Located about 15 miles east of the Quito, the airport will include a 400,000-square-foot passenger terminal, serve up to 4 million passengers and feature Latin America’s longest runway at 44,000 feet. Additional upgrades are planned between 2020 and 2030.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has made a change at the top of its Americas unit, naming Kirk Kinsell, current president of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as president of the region. The move follows the resignation of Jim Abrahamson, who has been named CEO of Interstate Hotels & Resorts, which manages 340 properties.

The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), in association with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), has honored two distinguished travel industry individuals, General Manager of WVCG Radio in Miami, Winsome Charlton, and deputy editor of Caribbean Travel & Life, Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon, for marketing the Caribbean as a premier travel destination in the U.S. The presentations were made at the CTO’s Allied Awards Luncheon, at The New York Marriott Marquis, Friday June 10, as part of activities to mark Caribbean Week in New York.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has questioned the timing of a recent detention of a Caribbean Airlines plane in Barbados at a time when pressure is being brought against Jamaica to allow REDjet to fly into the island. Golding said he was disturbed by reports he received recently that the Caribbean Airlines plane was “harassed” in Barbados.

Two Environment Secretariat officials who allegedly approved Spanish developer Hansa Urbana’s huge Cabo Cortes tourism complex in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state are the subject of an administrative complaint filed by Greenpeace.
