MSC Cruises announced the technical float-out of the MSC Fantasia in St. Nazaire, France. MSC Fantasia will join the MSC Cruises fleet on Dec. 18, as the largest ship to date to be commissioned by a European ship owner. The float-out took an hour to complete.
Uniworld is offering a nine-night package that includes a weeklong cruise on the Douro River through Portugal and Spain. The Douro River package begins with a two-night hotel stay in Lisbon before embarking on a seven-night cruise.
The Independence, a 57-year-old ocean liner purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line in April 2003 for a reported $4 million, left its berth in San Francisco on Feb. 8 and headed to a scrap yard in Asia.

Silversea Cruises has created 13 new “Elegant Explorations,” which are extended voyages of 24 to 92 days in 2009. These voyages combine visits to must-see traditional ports with exotic destinations that are off the beaten path.
