Alaska Airlines applied to the U.S. Deptartment of Transportation last month for authority to fly nonstop between Seattle and Cancun, Mexico, and between Portland, Oregon, and Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
If approved, the seasonal flights would operate this year from the end of October to the end of April.
Caribbean Star airlines will launch daily flights from Trinidad´s main airport to Antigua and Guyana in July, officials said Wednesday. The Antigua-based company will hire 34 new staffers, including 10 pilots.
It will also establish a new crew base and maintenance facility at Piarco Airport in Trinidad´s capital, Port-of-Spain, Caribbean Star said in a statement. Flights will be on a 50-seat DeHavilland airliners.
Spirit, the leading low-fare carrier to the Caribbean, announces an expansion to its Fort Lauderdale hub operation.
Effective December 14, Spirit will enhance its winter schedule to key destinations further reinforcing its position in Fort Lauderdale. Spirit will add flights to Jamaica, Santo Domingo, Dominican, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and New York City.
JetBlue Airways, New York´s low-fare hometown airline, will service Aruba with daily flights from John F. Kennedy International Airport, operating with Airbus A320, beginning September 15.

United Airlines and TACA have begin their codeshare agreement, significantly expanding international destination options and frequent-flyer opportunities for customers of both carriers.
United Airlines´ expanded service to Central America through TACA Codeshare and Frequent Flyer Agreement started this week. The partnership opens 18 new Central and South America destinations to United customers and gives TACA customers unprecedented access to 192 cities worldwide.
Lufthansa said increased travel in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region led to a 2.2 percent rise in passenger traffic in May, though this lagged its biggest European competitors.
The passenger load factor rose 0.6 of a percentage point to 74.5 percent, Lufthansa said earlier this week. The amount of freight and mail carried ratcheted up 4.2 percent from the year-earlier month to 148,000 tons, the German carrier added.
