U.S. Airlines’ Bag Fees Rose 275 Percent in Second Quarter

U.S. airlines rang up more than $669 million in baggage fees in the second quarter of 2009, reported the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

To put that in perspective, carriers collected $566 million in the first quarter this year and $178 million in the second quarter of 2008.

American and Delta topped the list with about $118 million each. US Airways ranked third with $104.1 million.

The DOT also said carriers tallied about $606.4 million in reservation change fees for the second quarter. For the first half of 2009, carriers collected about $1.2 billion in reservation change fees.
