Upcoming International Book Fair Dedicated to Santiago's Olga Portuondo

The next edition of Cuba’s International Book Fair will be celebrating the centennial of poet Raúl Ferrer and will be dedicated to Cuban researcher Olga Portuondo and essayist Leonardo Acosta, winner of the National Literature Award.

Olga Portuondo is the Historian of Santiago de Cuba City and has devoted her life to historic research, specifically in terms of the jurisdiction of the most Caribbean land during the 1700 - 1868 colonial age.

A significant part of her work targeted the study of the process that brought about the Cuban nationality. Portuondo published several articles on these matters, both in Cuba and overseas.

Editorial Oriente has published her books entitled St. Basilio Magno Seminar College (2000, co-authored by Juan Rovira S.J.) and The Virgin of the Charity of Cobre: A symbol of Cuban Identity (2001).

Olga Portuondo is a permanent professor at the Eastern University and a researcher with Cuba’s Academy of Sciences. She has been given the National Culture Distinction and has won several editions of the Annual Scientific Merit Award. Dr. Portuondo is a member of the Excelencias Group’s Consulting Council related to the celebration of the fifth centenary of Santiago de Cuba.

The massively-attended event is going to showcase ten of the finest titles by the National Social Sciences Award winner.

India has been chosen the guest country to the 2015 edition of the Book Fair, which this time round is scheduled to last through April instead of February, in an effort to complement it with fairs in rural communities and universities, according to poet Jesús David Curbelo, vice president of Foreign Relations at the Cuban Book Institute.
