UNESCO Official to Probe Iran’s Jahan-Nama Tower

The Culture Program specialist of Tehran’s UNESCO office arrived in Isfahan in order to scrutinize Iran’s measures for the modification of the Jahan-Nama Tower located near the internationally famous historical complex of Naqsh-e Jahan Square.

“The reports published by Iranian cultural officials show that beneficial modifications have been made to lessen the building’s threat to the complex and that a comprehensive report on the adjustments which have been made will be handed over to the UNESCO headquarters after the visit,” Junko Taniguchi told the Persian service of IRNA on Tuesday.

UNESCO had said that the Jahan-Nama Tower, which is located west of the Naqsh-e Jahan Complex, spoils the horizontal view of the square in which many monuments registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 are situated.

The organization had asked Iranian cultural officials to complete modification of the building by February 1, 2007, saying otherwise Naqsh-e Jahan Square would be added to the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger.
