United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) director general Koichiro Matsuura condemned the attacks perpetrated last week in the London public transport system.

In a news release issued to several media organizations, Mr. Matsuura expressed UNESCO´s solidarity with Londoners and presented his sincere condolences to the bereaved families and to British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"The attacks perpetrated in London are outrageous, just as attention was focused on London because of news about the Olympic games, which embody the values of understanding and fraternity, the city fell victim to a heinous act that is unjustifiable," the UNESCO director general stressed.
