UNESCO’s Matsuura Pays Official Visit to Cuba

Koichiro Matsuura, director general of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), started Monday an official visit to Cuba, Granma newspaper reports.

Matsuura, who arrived in this capital Sunday night, has met with Cuban leaders and visited sites of historic and cultural interest. This is the first trip to the Caribbean island of that organization’s top representative since November 1999, when he took his post, the daily states.

Cuba entered UNESCO on August 29, 1947 and since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959, the island has contributed qualitatively to different areas of education, science and cultural heritage.
