Afzal Khan, corporate communications manager at the Tourism Development Corporation (TDC), passed away yesterday morning, after suffering a massive heart attack. Khan, a former television reporter who began his career at Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT) in 1975, was 55.

During his career, Khan was chief executive officer at HCU Communications Ltd; head of news, sports and current affairs— International Broadcasting Network; program director—Ministry of Information and Public Administration; head of news, sports and current affairs—TTT;  member of the management committee of the Caribbean Publishers and Broadcasters Association; and consultant/trainer— Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Corporation for the Caribbean. He won the BWIA Journalist of the Year Award (1986) and Caribbean Broadcasting Union Journalist of the Year Award (1987).

In an official statement, acting Minister of Communications and Foreign Affairs Dr. Roodal Moonilal expressed sympathy on the passing of the long-serving communications and media practitioner. “Mr. Khan’s death has robbed the media community—and, indeed, the entire society—of an experienced, skilled and most knowledgeable practitioner, one who steadfastly served the industry for about three and a half decades,” he said.
