Train Service to Peru’s Macchu Picchu Halted after Landslide

PeruRail halted train service to the mountaintop Inca ruins at Macchu Picchu on Friday after heavy rains sent mud and rocks tumbling onto a stretch of track. The landslide covered 130 feet of track, PeruRail said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.

PeruRail, the only company operating train service from the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco, 350 miles southeast of Lima, to the ruins, did not specify when service is scheduled to resume.

The train shuttles about 1,700 passengers daily to and from Macchu Picchu, Peru's top tourist destination, which sits atop a craggy peak.
