Tourism is now new college degree in Cuba

Cuban nationals who want to become tourism professionals may from now on get a college degree in this field with special courses that have just been opened by Cuba’s vice president Carlos Lage Davila.

Mr. Lage underscored the importance of this university course expected to improve both service and quality of Cuban tourist products.

The new college specialty is now enrolling 104 working students in a four-and-a-half-year special course aimed at taking workplace training one peg higher with a comprehensive outlook and on-the-spot practical drills.

Raising workers’ educational level, fostering the creation of a top-rated professional workforce in different institutions and providing knowledge and skills are by and large the main reasons behind this and upcoming courses on tourism.

For Cuba’s minister of tourism Ibrahim Ferradaz, this college degree seeks to increase quality of the island nation’s leisure industry. One out of five tourism-related workers in Cuba is currently a college graduate.

Mr. Ferradaz added a new alternative aimed at achieving a better skilled and qualified workforce in the tourist industry is now opening up for more than half (58 percent) of the industry’s employees, as well as upgrading opportunities for those already employed in the sector.
