Three Crew Members Killed when Costa Europa Strikes Pier

Costa Crociere said three crew members were killed when the Costa Europa struck a pier while docking in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, early Feb. 26. Three passengers and one other crew member were injured and taken to the hospital. The ship sustained damage on its right side, reportedly a six-foot gash, according to overseas media reports, but was safely docked.

All guests were disembarked and accommodated in hotels while the Italian line worked to fly them home. Costa Europa was on an 18-day cruise from Dubai to Savona, with 1,437 guests on board.

The BBC reported that the accident occurred during strong winds. The dead sailors were an Indian, a Honduran and a Brazilian, the BBC said, while the injured reportedly include three British women and an Italian man.
