Threat of Rock Fall Closes Yosemite Cabins

The National Park Service has closed about one-third of lodging units at Yosemite National Park’s Curry Village because of rock fall peril, said the Associated Press on Friday.

Park officials said 233 cabins are closing permanently. About half of the 618 cabins have been off-limits since an Oct. 8 rock fall at Curry Village crushed one cabin and damaged others, the AP said. No one was hurt or killed.

In a Nov. 18 story, the AP said an examination of records found that rock falls in and around Curry Village have been happening more frequently in the past several years. Two people have been killed and two dozen injured since 1996, the AP said. The family of one of the deceased has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the park.

Two university studies have concluded that human water use above the rock face at Glacier Point have contributed to increased rock falls, the AP reported.
