Sugar mills to World Heritage List

The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO has agreed to list the ruins of the 15th century sugar cane mills located in the south of the Dominican Republic among its World Heritage Sites, informed Maria Cristina Carias, the deputy director of the National Monumental Heritage Office.

El Caribe newspaper reports that the ruins would be those of Engombe and Palave (West Santo Domingo), Duquesa (North Santo Domingo), Boca de Nigua and Diego Caballero (San Cristobal) and Sanate (La Romana).

Formal announcement will be made during the General Assembly of the UNESCO slated for China in June 2005. Carias indicated that UNESCO approved the project last month. The colonial edifices of Old Santo Domingo were included on the prestigious list in 1990.
