Statue Cruises Begins Selling Statue of Liberty Cruises Again
Statue Cruises on July 1 began selling tickets for hour-long excursions to the Statue of Liberty in anticipation of the reopening of the New York attraction following renovations from Hurricane Sandy damage.
The Statue of Liberty has been closed since October 29. Over $59 million has spent on renovating Liberty Island. The company said more information on the reopening of Ellis Island would be provided at a later date. Tours depart from Battery Park every 30 minutes.
The much-publicized issue of a change in screening, which would have allowed passengers on board boats and on islands prior to security checks, was reversed at the last minute.
Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly were vocal critics of the proposed plan. "The NYPD and the National Park Service have differences when it comes to ideas on how to protect visitors from a terrorist attack,” Kelly told reporters last week. Screening, at least for the time being, will now continue prior to boarding in Battery Park.
