St. Vincent Airport Terminal Construction to Begin This Year

Terminal construction will begin later this year on the $240 million Argyle International Airport in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), said government officials. The airport construction project, which will replace the existing E.T. Joshua Airport, broke ground in August 2008 and is expected to be finished by April 2012. The airport is being developed by the International Airport Development Company (IADC), a private limited liability company wholly owned by the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The terminal building will include 123,784 square feet of floor space, and is designed to handle about 1.4 million passengers per year, nearly four times the current airport’s capacity.

“The full realization of the potential of our country’s growth and development hinges on this international airport. And tourism is likely to be our main foreign exchange earner for a long time to come,” said Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves. The new airport is being built on 175 acres of land and will accommodate jets as large as Boeing 747-400s.
