A new causeway in St. Maarten’s Simpson Bay resort area on the Dutch side of the dual-nation island is designed to alleviate traffic across the island, according to St. Maarten Tourist Bureau officials.

The 2,500-foot causeway connects the Princess Juliana International Airport with the east bank of the Simpson Bay Lagoon’s east bank, providing faster travel between Simpson Bay and Cole Bay on the Dutch side and Marigot, the capital of the island’s French side.

The causeway’s swing bridge opens to allow boats and large yachts to pass side-by- side through two navigating channels during set opening times and serves as an alternate route in the event the Simpson Bay Bridge is inaccessible.
