Spanish trippers are the big spenders of Peru’s leisure industry, according to a research study conducted by the Peruvian Promotion Commission (PromPeru) revealed by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Each Spanish sunbather coming to this Andean nation forks over an average $1,008 in an 18-night stay. In the case of U.S. visitors, that figure hovers around $838 in a 17-night stay. And in keeping with the research, each foreign trekkers coming to Peru averages $781.

Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Alfredo Guerrero said the sector has deployed a series of promotional campaigns in Spain and the United States in an effort to draw deep-pocket tourists with a flair for blowing money.

Mr. Ferrero revealed there’s been a 4.7 percent hike (585,551 more visitors) in the number of foreign arrivals at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport compared to the same period of time the year before.

Regardless of a downtrodden world economy that has made a dent in some of Peru’s premiere tourist-sending markets this year –like the U.S., Argentina and Brazil- the country has seen an increase in the flow of incoming foreign tourists.

Germany, France, the U.K., Italy, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador are across the board Peru’s major markets and the targets of Lima’s aggressive blitz.
