Spanish Beaches Earn 603 Blue Flag Awards
The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has given Spain 603 Blue Flag awards for the 2011 season. The eco-label granted certifications for 511 beaches and 92 marinas, recognizing Spain’s dedication to environmentally friendly and safe development of its coastline.
The Blue Flag is a trademark owned by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization consisting of 65 organizations in 60 member countries in Europe, Africa, Oceania, Asia, North America and South America. Awarded annually, the initiative issues accreditations based on such criteria as water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management as well as safety and other services.
This year, each of Spain’s noted vacation destinations received numerous Blue Flag awards, including 117 beach and 13 marina awards for the region of Galicia, 104 beach and 12 marina awards for the Valencia region, 86 beach and 22 marina awards for Catalonia as well as 66 beach and 15 marina awards for Andalusia.
