Agriculture minister Luis Ramón Rodríguez announced Wednesday that two iconic public markets will be converted into modern centers he says will boost Santo Domingo tourism.

The official said a call for tender is being prepared to rebuild the markets, Mercado Modelo on Mella Av, and Mercado Nuevo on Duarte Av., as part of the plan to create the national food network (RENA).

He said the construction and reconstruction of the capital’s major public markets is a Government priority, and revealed that by midyear, the funding will be available for the Nuevo and Modelo, the latter to become specialized in offering crafts and jewelry, with an area to showcase fruits and vegetables.
