Santiago de Cuba Makes Progress in Renovating the Country's Oldest Museum

The renovation works at Cuba's oldest museum Emilio Bacardí continue here, where the eclectic facade of the building has become a visual icon of the historical urban center of Santiago de Cuba.

The works are part of the efforts to safeguard the architectural, cultural and historical heritage of the city that will turn 500 years old next 2015 and is getting ready to request the inclusion of its historical center in the World Heritage List.

Located on Pío Rosado street, between Aguilera and Heredia, the building has three exhibition rooms featuring belongings of Cuban national heroes, artifacts of the island's first inhabitants and even an Egyptian mummy brought by Bacardí and his wife Elvira Cape in 1912.

The museum was declared National Monument in 1999 and also exhibits important paintings of renowned Cuban and international artists from the colonial period and the Spanish Renaissance.
