The news came out Monday during the launch of the 500th Anniversary of the city’s foundation. Another high note went to Santiago-distilled rum, an item that adds a touch of authenticity to the region as it now seeks to reach out to foreign markets and diversify its product portfolio.
Beatriz Johnson, deputy chairwoman of the People’s Power Provincial Assembly, said Santiago is considered Cuba’s second largest and most populated city.
For his part, architect Omar Lopez Rodriguez, curator of Santiago de Cuba, underscored the tremendous potentials the city has in perspective tourism development, especially in the value of its cultural scenery.
Mr. Rodriguez recalled that Santiago de Cuba was the seventh village founded in the island by Spanish colonizer Diego Velazquez, and the country’s capital into the half of the 16th century.
