Riviera Maya Second-fastest Growing Beach Destination in the World

Riviera Maya/ Playa del Carmen was named second in the International Beach Destination category in the list of Top10 Fastest Growing Domestic and International Destinations by Orbitz.com. The ranking was based on percentage growth in hotel bookings from 2005 to 2008, meaning that the data was being collected throughout a three year period.

“The Riviera Maya is a place to dream and make your dreams come true”, said Javier Aranda Pedrero, Director of Tourism for the Riviera Maya Tourism Promotion Board. “It combines the best in world-class tourism: white sand beaches, warm blue waters, water sports, dining, entertainment, golf, spas, all side-by-side with the ancient Mayan history, culture and architecture.”

This was the first time that Orbitz.com did such a survey, and its results reflected the most booming winter destinations based on the U.S. consumers’ preferences. Most of the site’s bookings originate from the U.S., so the survey’s results were also influenced by the fact that more and more American vacationers are realizing how easily they can reach Riviera Maya from many U.S. airports.
