Rehabilitation of Las Enramadas Heritage Corridor

Santiago de Cuba is making the arrangements to celebrate five centuries in the heart of the people and the City Curator’s Office has been developing urban projects, such as the rehabilitation of Las Enramadas Heritage Corridor.

Until 1740, this important street was called Calle Ancha, but it was later named Las Enramadas because it was covered with palm tree leaves to ease the intense effects of Santiago’s characteristic climate and carry out religious processions of Corpus Cristi.

After the 1990s, this legendary street suffered from the economic crisis that affected the whole country. The urban image was spoiled by the private businesses that were established along the street.

When Santiago de Cuba celebrated the 490th anniversary of its foundation, the City Curator’s Office teed off the “Enramadas Vive” project in an effort to progressively transform the urban image of this street.

That’s the reason why the authorities have organized actions targeting buildings and public spaces, walls and the urban furniture system, properties have been turned into social establishments, thus increasing offers and giving more life to the street. As an outstanding element, the street has been pedestrianized.

El Jardín de las Enramadas ice-cream parlor y and Espiral project, by the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets, are also included in the project.

Nowadays, the upcoming fifth anniversary of the existence of a city surrounded by history and traditions has given a new boost to the project known as Las Enramadas Heritage Corridor.

Imperial Hotel, a gem of Santiago’s eclecticism, has also been recovered thanks to the collaboration of several construction companies in the territory. On the other hand, an art deco-style warehouse is going to be built and given to private workers and artisans.
Plaza de los Columpios, El Tentempié cafeteria, Arte Clip for artistic work with images, Casa de La Magia and the construction of a parking lot are some other projects.

The works will continue in buildings, properties offering gastronomic, commercial and cultural services, as well as the urban furniture system.
