Refurbishment of Cozumel’s Seawall Raises Eyebrows

Luis Ocejo Anduze, SERVYTUR president in the destination of Cozumel (Mexican Caribbean), admits there’re increasing concern and uncertainty in the local corporate sector over the way remodeling works of the Cozumel Seawall are being conducted.

“Planners are taking views others than the ones previously agreed on, and so far the only body that’s getting down on the project is the Potable Water & Sewerage Commission, when indeed both CFE and TELMEX should be tagging along in the concealment of grids to avoid duality and extra spending for the commercial sector,” Mr. Anduze explained.

Up to now, no signs indicating groundbreaking works on the pavement have been set and no progress has been made either in the creation of a trusteeship that’s supposed to run all resources and funds. The Work Surveillance Commission, a watchdog in charge of working out any problems or deficiencies that might arise during the execution of the project remains unformed.

And passage of a bill that seeks to grant owners of establishments on both sides of the seawall all fiscal profits for the next five years as a way of offsetting them for the 20 million pesos they shelled out for the works (a fifth of the total refurbishment budget) continues to drag on in Congress.
