Refurbishment of “The Governor’s Hill”
The actions to revitalize heritage buildings, public spaces and urban properties, include the refurbishment of the La Loma del Intendente (The Governor’s Hill) as part of the projects to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the village, in July 2015.

With great historic, cultural and landscape values, refurbishing works are going to be developed in that area during two stages, as explained by María Teresa Cayón, urbanism specialist of the Master Plan organized by City Curator’s Office.
“The first moment”, she said, “will be dedicated to the 58th anniversary of the armed uprising in Santiago de Cuba, on November 30, which includes works at the Museum of Clandestine Fight and its surroundings.”
“There are other important sites in terms of our national history, such as the house where the historic leader of our Revolution, Fidel Castro, lived during his childhood” she mentioned.
The staircase of Padre Pico is another popular place, an unmistakable mark of the eastern city, where the works are also going to be carried out in a second moment that will come to an end with the celebration of Santiago de Cuba Village’s anniversary (1515-2015).
Built in 1899 during the term of Mayor Emilio Bacardí, the staircase features 52 steps, grouped in 13 blocks with four steps each and 12 landings.
There are other two staircases at El Tivolí neighborhood: Santiago Streets and Virgen & Santa Rosa, due to the irregular topography where that community is based, which since the late 18th century has welcomed French migrants. That’s the origin of its name and the influences it has received in terms of culture, cuisine and other.
El Tivolí Avenue hosts the famous Santiago carnivals with dazzling choreographies, thus keeping the traditions alive.
