Punishment of Mexico City’s Sexual Tourism Demanded

Silvia Oliva Fragoso, a local congresswoman of the Democratic Revolution Party, called this week for an overhaul of the Mexican capital’s Penal Code in order to impose tougher sanctions of up to 14 years in prison against those who promote sexual tourism in Mexico’s Federal District.

Mrs. Fragoso, also a member of the Public Security Committee of the Mexican Parliament, basically proposed a legislative reform of Article 188 to establish a 14-year sentence for wrongdoers convicted of sexual tourism promotion.

In virtue of the proposed legal reform, similar sentences will be imposed to people who get involved in sexual relations with minors.

In the same breath, Mrs. Fragoso called sexual exploitation of children a criminal activity that rubs the entire world the wrong way, hampers the development of nations and undermines both the physical and mental health of those who are supposed to hold the future of mankind in their hands.

Family breakups, poverty, ignorance, marginality and the prevalence of brittle moral principles set the stage for some crooked people to turn sexual exploitation into a way of living.
