PromPeru Showcases Culinary Delights at World Travel Awards

PromPeru, the trade, tourism and investment office of Peru, has announced Peru has been nominated for the title of World’s Leading Culinary Destination at the World Travel Awards 2013.

They are firm favorites, having been the victors last year, but need to beat off stiff competition from Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the USA.

Peru’s eclectic cuisine has earned acknowledgement as one of the world’s finest through its quinoa, ceviche and pisco sours, which have crossed borders and become favorites around the world.

Peru is a country of extraordinary variety of ecosystems and living resources.

It grows over 4,000 varieties of potato; has the greatest diversity in varieties of corn and chili in hundreds of colors and flavors, and it ranks top in diversity of fish.

Peruvian cuisine is a melting pot of different cultures which have come together to form a unique blend of flavors and techniques.

With the arrival of European and Asian immigrants centuries ago, their ingredients and customs intertwined over the years, creating what is known as Peruvian cuisine; one of the fastest growing gastronomic movements today with many accolades and awards on an international level.

For the past 19 years, the World Travel Awards have recognized and celebrated excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.

Alvaro Silva-Santisteban, director, PromPeru, United Arab Emirates, who will be attending the Saturday night awards at La Cigale hotel in Doha commented: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for this prestigious award for a consecutive year and are proud to be known as a gastronomic superpower.

“It is a tribute to our culture and ancient heritage and the talented members of Peru’s food and beverage industry.”
