Port Revamped in Dominican Capital in Preparation for Cruise Season

The Ozama river dredging and resumption of the Don Diego Port construction would allow the Dominican capital to start harboring the 40 cruise ships on schedule for the 2006-2007 season, according to investors of the project.

Lisandro Macarulla, president of the Sans Souci firm undertaking this enterprise, announced that on October 24, the Braemar cruise ship will arrive, to become the first to use the modern sea terminal, after its total reconstruction.

Over 400 thousand cubic tons of solid waste and sediments have been removed by Inversiones Turisticas Sans Souci from the bottom of the Ozama river, to ensure levels of depth required by the cruising industry.

The dredging process has improved the area’s profile and will recover the river’s optimal depth, according to investors.

The Don Diego Tourism Terminal project includes a two-level infrastructure, with waiting and meeting rooms, duty-free shops, restaurants, a coffee shop and bar, kitchens and an uncovered terrace.

Sufficient parking space for vehicles, taxis and tour buses will be available for access by tourists coming to the port’s terminal, located in front of the Ozama Fort.
