The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans unveiled a plan for short- and long-term growth. The 63-page document, entitled “Charting the Future of the Port of New Orleans,” outlines a $1 billion plan.

Specifically, it maps projects aimed at capturing new container and break-bulk cargo and providing expanded cruise opportunities and outlines financing mechanisms to bring the plan to fruition.

Short-term projects for the cruise industry include the development of the Poland Avenue Cruise Terminal. The $6.5 million project would retrofit the existing, upriver end of the wharf’s shed, and all work would take place within the existing confines of the facility.

Conceptual work has begun, and Louisiana Capital Outlay Program funds were allocated in 2003. In addition, $16 million is needed to provide both the Poland and Julia Street cruise terminals with enclosed gangways for today’s cruise ships.
