Port Everglades to Install Floor Art in Cruise Terminal

Artist Michele Oka Doner will install a 3,000-square-foot work of art in the center floor of the new cruise terminal at Port Everglades, which will serve as the home for Royal Caribbean International’s new Oasis-class ships.

The first of Royal Caribbean’s 5,400-passenger cruise ships, Oasis of the Seas, is scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades in November, where it will be officially named and begin sailing every Saturday year-round from the port. The concept is to create a “well-traveled” floor with deep green and blue terrazzo matrices. An eight-foot diameter globe in cast bronze will be depicted in a spinning manner.

The globe will be crisscrossed with longitudinal and latitudinal lines. Sweeps of white, pink and silver mother-of-pearl will simulate trade winds. Oka Doner is known for her public art installations, including “A Walk on the Beach” at Miami International Airport, which features nearly a mile of dark terrazzo inlaid with bronze and mother of pearl.

Recent work includes collections with Christofle and Steuben Glass as well as public art projects at Rutgers University, the Ocean County Library in New Jersey, and the University of South Florida in Sarasota.
