Peru Starts Promotion, Restoration of Ancient City near Nazca

The Peruvian government has started restoration work on Cahuachi, an archaeological site 286 miles south of Lima. The restoration work is expected to be finished somewhere in the year 2011.

Cahuachi is an ancient city believed to have been founded between 400 A.D. and 450 A.D. as a ceremonial center for religious leaders. It’s also believed to have been connected to the mysterious Nazca Lines, a series of giant drawings in the ground 14 miles from the ancient city.

The site includes 36 pyramids from 49 to 115 feet in height. The dominant structure, now known as the Grand Pyramid, is 92 feet high, with seven levels. Once on site, local guides offer guided tours of Cahuachi.

In addition, the Antonini Museum in Nazca includes a collection of ceramic pieces, textiles and religious relics from Cahuachi.
