Travelers are being warned they must have passports to enter or reenter the United States by air from the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda or Canada. The rule affects U.S. citizens and all other air travelers. It does not apply to travelers arriving by land or sea.

U.S. citizens returning from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not need to show passports. Travelers without valid passports are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible.

It typically takes up to four weeks to get a passport after applying, or up to three weeks for more expensive, expedited service through the Passport Services Office.
