Park Project Opens in Montego Bay

Jamaica tourism officials cut the ribbon Monday on an attraction in Montego Bay that was five years in the making. The Old Hospital Park on Montego Bay’s “Hip Strip” completed a $530,000 upgrade that includes several gazebos, bathrooms and an information desk, according to the Jamaica Observer.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett hailed the opening of the green space as a “red-letter day in Montego Bay’s development. The park will add a new dimension to the city’s tourism product and to the beauty of the resort city.”

Financing for the project upgrade came from Jamaica’s Tourism Enhancement Fund. Work began in 2006 with a target opening date of 2007 to coincide with Jamaica’s hosting of part of the World Cup competitions.

It hit some roadblocks along the way, but is now open to locals and visitors and soon will be renamed. The park project is part of a larger development plan for Montego Bay, according to Bartlett.
