Number of Self-employed Workers Soars in Santiago

The number of self-employed workers in Santiago de Cuba totaled 34,802 by the end of the first seven months of 2014, nearly five thousand over the same period in 2013.

The information, published on Sierra Maestra newspaper’s website, points out that the most represented activities in this sector are transportation, food making and selling, hired workers and telecommunication agents (recently approved).

The list continues with people that produce and sell items for household use, carretilleros or agricultural product peddlers, people linked to the house, rooms and spaces rental business.

According to the information provided by the Taxpayer Registry of the National Office for Tax Management in the province, most of those self-employed workers are unionized and included in the Social Security special system.

By the end of July, 65 per cent of these workers were based in such municipalities as Santiago de Cuba, Contramaestre, Palma Soriano, Songo-La Maya and Tercer Frente.

Authorities from the Labor and Social Security Department recognize the Self-employed Work as one of the foremost contributing elements in this stage, because of the wide possibilities to create jobs.
