Nisbet Plantation Aims to Become Greenest Hotel in Nevis

Nisbet Plantation Beach Club has ambitions to be the greenest hotel in Nevis with a series of initiatives ranging from the installation of an artificial reef to sourcing products locally including baskets made on site

As the Caribbean’s only plantation property to have its own stretch of white sand beach, Nisbet Plantation feels an obligation to preserve the beach. To this end the hotel has recently completed a major conservation project to install an artificial reef.

Measuring around 60 meters in length it is helping to reduce the energy of waves reaching the shore and providing better swimming conditions. In addition it will provide an improved marine habitat for fish and coral.

Nisbet Plantation is also committed to using as many locally sourced products as possible. One very local example is in the basket ware used throughout the property, including in the guest bathrooms to hold the toiletries.

Guests can also taste the benefits of local sourcing. Executive chef de cuisine Tony Piani works very closely with local farmers to source top quality fresh produce and local exotic fruits.

The hotel is working towards achieving full Green Globe accreditation and has instituted initiatives designed to reduce its environmental impact including giving food scraps to local farmers for their pigs and scrap paper is given to local egg farmers.

Nisbet Plantation has been working with local schools since 1999 and has had a major impact on the lives of many elementary school children. The hotel has “adopted” local schools, filling library shelves with children’s books, providing computers and much more.
