New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu unveiled plans for a new $650 million terminal at Louis Armstrong Airport, with completion set for 2018.

The announcement comes less than two years after Landrieu requested the New Orleans Aviation Board to undertake an in-depth analysis regarding the future of the airport, which is more than 50 years old.

"Sections of the airport recently were renovated in advance of Super Bowl 2013, but the behind-the-wall infrastructure is in need of an overhaul," the mayor said.

Construction is expected to start in 2014 on the north side of current airport property. The airport handled 8.6 million passengers in 2012.
