Montserrat’s Old Towne Now Safe for Residents, Visitors

After months of closure after the area was deemed unsafe by volcanic experts several months ago, Montserrat’s historic Old Towne, on the western side of the island, has been reopened to residents and visitors by Gov. Peter Waterworth.

“The rebirth of Old Towne is good news for Montserrat and for tourism,” said Director of Tourism Ernestine Cassell. “Visitors to Old Towne will discover Montserrat’s history and charm.”

According to the tourism office, renewed access to Old Towne means restored employment opportunities for many taxi operators, restaurateurs, gardeners and housekeepers, who were unemployed when the area was deemed unsafe.
